Was Positives:

Karlsruhe, Germany

What to do over the weekend? We planned a trip to Karlsruhe in Easter. Then again, why wait until Easter? So, we did. We availed of the Baden Württemberg (BW) Ticket and paid 25 Euros for it. It is a great deal. It costs pretty much like when we eat out in our favorite restaurant.

We didn't plan on seeing any great attractions in Karlsruhe. We hopped on a train and on we go. We got there and went directly to the Tourist Information. It is located right in front of the train station. We were informed that the use of trams and busses are included in our BW Ticket. Yipeee!!!

Karlsruhe literally means Karl's rest (resting area in this case). It is a fan-shaped city wherein the castle plays the central role. M relies on his navi (be it smart phone or map) to get his way around. I, on the other hand, rely on my mouth to guide me around. :) Maybe, it is a girl thing...grins.. I asked a stranger where the castle(Schloss) is. She told me the way and beamed that we definitely have to visit the area near the orangery. We walked and walked...
Cute and curly....
An elephant...never seen anything like it...

I forgot what she said. Then, we saw this..........

Lake of Flowers....simply breathtaking

Now I remembered what she said....lake of flowers! True to her words, it was indeed lake or lakes of flowers --- the finest I have seen in months!!! People stopped and some took photos .....truly magnificent!

Karlsruhe is a shopper's paradise. My take --- If you are a big fan of H&M, you will enjoy yourself because they have around 5 shops, just walking distances from each other. It also has shoppig malls like we have in the Philippines (Post Gallerie and Ettlinger Tor). Bargains--- 3 Euros for a pullover, 1 dozen fresh tulips for 1.99 Euros in the market. Where we live, I only saw such prices for tulips in big supermarket chains/discount stores, not in the fresh market.
Market...yup, I chickened out and only took a photo from afar
It was a warm and sunny day. As expected, the ice cream shops are full of people. Thanks M for the ice cream treat and for the wonderful day!
=====
Sure some of the clothes are cheap. When I checked where they are made, they are labeled as Made in China. Go figure!

================================================================

Was Teueres bedeutet nicht immer gut/schlecht. Umgekehrt was Günstiges bedeutet nicht immer schlecht/gut. Am Ende habe ich kein Kleidungen gekauft.

A Heartwarming Story -- An Angel at Work

Have you ever hitch-hiked in your life? Under what circumstance did you do it? Were you forced to or was it just for adventure? I'd sure would like to know.

My idea of it is, sure it is fun or even adventurous. But as the person picking the hitchhiker up, it can be a daunting experience. Who knows if it is safe --- for both parties.

Yesterday M and I wanted to go to destination X. While we were in train, I thanked God that he brought us safely to our second stop. When we went out and tried to look for the bus connecting us to our final destination, it wasn't there. We found out that the bus stop was not in this train station but the next one. The next possible way to get to our destination was in 2.5 hours!!! We were stuck but didn't give up. We walked to the next 2 bus stops to see if there is any way of getting around the 2.5 hours' wait. In this era of phone connectivity, it was also useless. We didn't have the cellphone number of the possible person to pick us up. We tried to get the cellphone number through other means but nothing, not known. We needed to be in destination X because time is of the essence. We were to help someone. We were calm but a bit stressed as well. I prayed and asked God that he brought us here that he please let us out of this dilemma.

We thought of our scenarios and what other options we have:
1) Wait for more than 2 hours
2) Walk for about 2 hours and we will be there. By then, we will all be physically drained and the bus will arrive a few minutes later if we had walked. So, back to option 1.
3) Hitchhike

I saw a few cars passing by, deciding everytime if I should or if I shouldn't. When I saw someone who just came out of the travel agency and was driving towards us, I thought here it goes. I simply slowly reached out my right arm and showed the thumbs-up sign. The car stopped and she opened her locked doors. I , then, opened the passenger door and asked if she is travelling to X. She said, no....she lives just a few meters away. I was disheartened. She asks me when is our the next connection. I said in more than 2 hours. She said, come, hop on and I'll bring you guys there. Later, we chatted and she was really friendly. We even said "du" to one another, informal form of addressing people. She said the way I hitchhiked was very sweet (sehr süß) that she took us in. Ok, she said that twice so it must be very true. She understood our situation perfectly as her daughter used to live in X and had difficulty going in and out as well.

Thank you, Ms Conni! You really saved us!!! Thank you for going out of your way to bring us to our destination. You surely are an angel at work!

Thank you for sending angels in our lives.

p.s. It makes me think right now what kind of accent I have when talking coz she said I had a nice accent...grins. Darn, by now, I thought I spoke like a true-blooded German.....hehehe.

=====================

A Heartwarming Story-- Or What I Think To Be :)

October 1997, Germany

This morning I went to try to buy a pair of winter boots for me.  I took about 1 hour checking out for one but something was always wrong with what i found.
I was resigned to the fate that i have to find one soon before start of heavy snowfall, just not today as it wasn't meant to be, the shops close early, too, on Saturdays.
I tried walking to my new neighborhood to look for the church i plan to attend the next day.  I saw the church and saw the time of the service.  I walked in a different path than the one i used, to get to know my surrounding.
I saw an old lady sweeping the dried leaves on the open garage area.  I wanted to help her but I was afraid that my offer will also be rejected.  After thinking about it and passing her by for about 10 steps, I went back and asked if she needed help.  I was surprised she said yes.  She asked what I understood to be school.  Although I thought I am a bit too old to be in school, i answered that i go to this university.  She then told me ....no no...she meant shoes......if my shoe size was 37.(Schule/Schuhe)  I was too surprised coz I felt as if she read my thought or could see the size of my feet and would know what size it is.  I felt odd that she didn't just let me start helping her.  She told me she has a pair of boots that she doesn't use anymore.  From what i understood, she was trying to sell me the shoes.  As a student and having the budget of one, I immediately said sorry but i don't have money.  I was afraid that she would force me into buying her shoes.  She told me that she is giving it to me for free.  I said yes if it fits. Then, i started helping her sweep for 3 minutes and went with her to her flat.  She told me that she planned to give it to the Red Cross and it is now even better coz she saw the beneficiary.  As you can very well imagine, I went back to the dorm with a thankful and grateful heart.  Not only did I get a pair of boots that I needed but ended up with a total of 3 pairs of shoes, 3 pieces of scarfs, a pullover and a cup of pudding :)))

p.s. The cup of pudding was the best treat...:p

Staufen - City of Faust in Breisgau

Reasons why I wanted to go to Staufen:
1. Short trip from Freiburg
2. Some of the buildings and houses have cracks.
3. Supposedly pretty sceneries
We finally went to Staufen. So, why are there cracks in some of the buildings and houses? Before this trip, didn't exactly inform myself. I merely thought it was because of architectural/structural flaws of the buidings/houses themselves. The real reason has something to do with the geothermal drillings done in 2007. Read more info under the official website of Staufen.
Zähringer Castle Ruin
From Staufen Main Station, it was about 1.5 km walk to Zähringer Castle Ruin. One can't miss the castle ruin when in Staufen. It is almost like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, everywhere you go, you see it. Going up takes about 15 minutes, with short photo stops. The view going up is scenic. You walk your way through vineyards. Every now and then, you can read signs informing you of the type of grape grown there, its characteristics, etc.

From Another Point of View
Short break. Then, it was time to go down. We took another road going down. When I saw a herd of sheeps, I couldn't help myself but sing "Baa, baa black Sheep, have you any wool, Yes sir yes sir, three bags full...."
No Black Sheep Anywhere
What a Sight!
Next stop was the city center. Here are photos so you can imagine how it looks like.
For Auntie F & R, who both love horses (made out of shoehorses!)
Have you been to Freiburg? If so, Staufen is kind of a little Freiburg in my opinion. Both have quaint shops and alleys. Both have "Bächle" or small canals running along the main center though Staufen has a more homey feel to it than Freiburg.
Bächle or small canals
Sign of Hotel Krone..there is even a crown on top!!!
Sign of What Else...Hotel Sonne!
Weather Vane....Outstanding!!!
This weather vane is an eyecatcher for me. Instead of the usual rooster that we all know,  here is lady trying to hold on to her blown-away hat.

Sign of a Tailor :)
Facade of the Town Hall/City Hall (Unfortunately with the famous cracks)
This is part of the homey feel I am talking about ..
Quite Unique on its Own
Isn't it so inviting?
I am quite surprised about Staufen. I didn't know that it is famous for Faust. It is supposedly here where he made a pact with the devil. One thing more I learned, the reason behind the cracks.
Faust and the Devil ---Hotel Löwen
Staufen is definitely a place where I can imagine to go in Autumn or when the vineyards are full with grapes :) I am sure it would be even prettier then. It is a great half-day excursion for young and old alike. Okay, if one is into museums (e.g. Ceramic Museum), one may need a day.
All in all, lots of stuffs to see in such a short time.
Back at the train station...
